With macOS 10.12 (Sierra) Apple has beefed up security.

If you go into System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General you will now only see two options by default under Allow apps downloaded from:

  • App Store
  • App Store and identified developers

If the application you want to install isn’t in one of these categories you will get a security error.

A workaround is to run the following command:

sudo spctl –master-disable

This will restore the following option in Allow apps downloaded from:

  • Anywhere
