A driver is software that allows a physical hardware device in your computer to communicate and interact with the operating system. If a specific hardware part of your computer is not working correctly, attempting to update a driver is worth trying.

Before proceeding with the instructions, save whatever documents you are working on. You will likely need to restart your computer to install updates.

My computer is an:

iSchool issued Lenovo
iSchool issued HP

1) click the lower-left Windows icon to bring up the Start menu

2) start typing the words “system update”, click the System Update icon to start the application

3) click Next, the application will search for updates applicable to your computer

4) select only the items that have the words “Driver” or “BIOS” in the title, click Next

note: The picture below is an example. The updates that appear for your particular machine will likely be different from what is pictured below. It is important to select only the items that have the words “Driver” or “BIOS” in the title.

5) click Download

6) the selected items will be downloaded and installed

7) when installation is finished, you may be prompted to restart the computer, if so, click Yes to restart your computer

1) click the lower-left Windows icon to bring up the Start menu

2) start typing the words “HP SoftPaq Download Manager”, click the HP SoftPaq Download Manager icon in the search results to start the application

3) HP SoftPaq Download Manager will start, click OK to address the catalog-downloaded message

4) click Category, check only the items that have the words “Driver” or “BIOS” in the title

note: The picture below is an example. The updates that appear for your particular machine will likely be different from what is pictured below. It is important to select only the items that have the words “Driver” or “BIOS” in the title.

5) click Install

6) if prompted with a license agreement, read the agreement, select I accept…, click Continue

7) the selected drivers will be downloaded then installed

8) after installation, an “Installation Summary” will be shown, click Close

If a BIOS update is available, further, manual installation is necessary:

9) check the box for the available BIOS update, click Yes

10) click Next

11) accept any license terms that appear, click Next

12) click Next

13) select Update, click Next

14) click Restart Now, the computer will restart and apply the BIOS update
