An ISO image is a single file (with the extension “.ISO”) containing all of the contents of an installation CD or DVD. Many of the programs available through Dreamspark (formerly MSDN Academic Alliance) are downloadable in ISO file format only, and in order to install them one must burn the ISO image to a blank disc. In the case of operating system installation discs, this method also makes the disc bootable.

Currently, iSchool computers are running Windows 7 with a built-in burn utility capable of burning ISO images.

These instructions are also available in video form. You can view the video by clicking the image to the right.

Choose the software you want to download. You may purchase CDs and DVDs and have them shipped to your home but this option is limited to certain titles.

Then press the Add to cart button, and then print out the page called Order Details

Then press the Download button, and then save the downloader to your desktop or some place that is easy to remember and get to.

After you have successfully downloaded the downloader, run the downloader.

Then start the downloading the actual software by pressing Continue.

Once you have started, you should see a picture sort of like the one above. You may choose a custom directory if you wish to save the files for later use. You don’t have to save the downloaded software once it has been installed, but it is an option if you might need them later.

Once an ISO has been downloaded to your machine from the Dreamspark MSDN-AA download center site, simply follow these steps:

  1. Insert a blank disc
  2. Navigate to the location of the ISO file and right-click, then select Burn disc image to open the Windows Disc Image Burner tool.
  3. Select the location of the writable disc drive from the drop-down box
  4. Click burn to begin writing to the disc.

Note: Remember to label the disc after the burning process has completed.

If the program was downloaded in the format of non-ISO file then please see our article about downloading and installing non-iso software.

To re-download the file or to access the product serial number at any point in the future (while still a student), just visit the Dreamspark (MSDNAA) site linked above and log in using your UW email address and custom password.

if you have any questions contact the Dreamspark (MSDNAA) administrators at msdnaa@washington.edu.
