What is research?

We take our definition from the Encyclopaedia of the Social Sciences:

“The manipulation of things, concepts or symbols for the purpose of generalizing to extend, correct or verify knowledge, whether that knowledge aids in construction of a theory or in the practice of an art.”

Research is different from:

  • Teaching – which is related to transferring existing knowledge
  • Scholarship – which usually describes surveying existing knowledge
  • Development – which NIH defines as “the systematic use of knowledge and understanding gained from research directed toward the production of useful materials, devices, systems, or methods, including design and development of prototypes and processes.”
